The Ma Mian skirt is named for its resemblance to ancient trapezoidal pagodas. It became most popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties, worn by everyone due to its diversity and memorable symbolism. Suitable for traditional festivals, weddings, and everyday wear, it remains one of the most sought-after styles of hanfu today.
The top has matching patterns at the collar and cuffs. The bronze-green color imitates that of the bronze wares from the Shang and Zhou dynasties. This Hanfu Shang Zhou is magnificent and rich in historical connotations, possessing a strong new Chinese style. It is reasonably priced and exquisitely crafted. It is a product of Xinghehange, one of the largest Hanfu manufacturers in China, so the quality is guaranteed and it has sold over ten thousand pieces domestically.
The Shang and Zhou dynasties are significant historical milestones in ancient China. The most representative items are the bronze wares used as ritual vessels for communicating with the gods and praying. Bronze wares can be classified into food vessels, wine vessels, water vessels, musical instruments and so on. The inspiration for this mamian skirt comes from the unearthed cultural relics of the Shang and Zhou periods, featuring patterns such as Taotie（a mythical creature, 饕餮）, Xuanniao (a mythical bird，玄鸟), Dragon (龙), and Small Bird patterns（小鸟纹）.
For example, there is a beast head named Taotie (饕餮) on the upper part of the front of the skirt panel. The pattern looks magnificent but not coquettish, majestic but not ferocious. The Xuanniao (玄鸟) is in the central pattern area of the whole skirt. Its shape is derived from the line in the movie "Creation of the Gods: Kingdom of Storms" that "the Xuanniao representing the mandate of heaven descended and thus the Shang state was born". The Xuanniao represents sacredness, spirituality, freedom and good fortune. At the bottom of the skirt, there is a half Dragon pattern, which is inspired by the Shang Dynasty cultural relic "Dragon and Tiger Bronze Zun" (龙虎铜尊), representing wisdom and a strong spiritual will. The small bird pattern is beside the xuanniao. Its pattern is inspired by the nine small birds on the bronze divine tree, a Sanxingdui relic (三星堆文物). The shape of the divine tree reflects the worship of the sun by the ancient Shu people. The small birds are the sun god birds. For the people, the small birds are the divine birds that communicate between heaven and earth.
A thousand years have passed in a flash. Now, when we look back at the splendid ancient Chinese civilization, it is like a meeting between the modern people and the ancients. The combination of cyan and gold tells us that there was once a dynasty that existed and shone brightly.
